That story began on a typewriter there were no PCs in those days. It remained unfinished for several years. Then, about twenty years ago, I started writing another novel, but again this venture was destined to be short-lived thanks to my wife at the time. She said it was a waste of time and I should spend more time with the kids. I believed her, and shelved the project. Ten years later, my new partner encouraged me when I said I wanted to write, and even allocated time on the computer for me. (We only had one in the house and I had to share it). Over the next three years, I wrote three novels, including one of those that I had started ten years earlier. I had them published by an American print-on-demand company, but success with them has yet to eventuate. My partner then saw an article in a local magazine for a short story competition. I entered, and was chosen as one of fifty to be compiled into a book, published in New Zealand. No royalties were received, even though the book was sold out! I then wrote another novel and submitted it for critique. Consequently, I downed fingers for a while, feeling despondent, yet pleased at the same time. I took on board all the positives and thought hard about how to approach my writing. Since then I have valued every newsletter, tip and other advice, from Easywaytowrite (Thanks Rob), and I am re-writing that novel. It feels good. It flows. Theres plenty of action. The direction is good. The characters are likeable and believable. There are twists and turns. Its coming together nicely. I am now serious about my writing, even though its still part time. I have two other jobs that pay for the moment. I have already accepted a print on demand package from a Canadian company, and it includes a whole range of promotional material. I plan to approach a local bookstore and start with a signing, and see what happens. Regardless, I will keep on writing novels, ideas for which are not short and all documented. There are so many, and I dont even have to look far. I follow the news and include similar scenarios for my characters. It saves the brain from thinking too hard about plots and how to get from beginning to end. I am enjoying throwing in unexpected sub-plots, but make sure they fit. Its exciting and I want a million-seller! Glenn Carley 68
